Participant waiver

A pre-launch draft describing the risks and responsibilities associated with kayak tournament participation.

Pre-launch draftLast updated August 29, 2026
Before paid registration opens

This is not yet the signable waiver. It must be reviewed with the club's insurer and an Illinois attorney before CIKBS relies on it for an event.

Assumption of risk

I understand that kayak fishing and tournament participation involve inherent and other risks, including drowning, immersion, hypothermia or heat illness, severe weather, lightning, current, waves, submerged objects, wildlife, hooks and sharp equipment, collisions, falls, remote locations, equipment failure, transportation, illness, and delayed emergency response. I voluntarily choose to participate with knowledge of these risks.

Fitness, equipment, and rules

I represent that I am physically capable of participating and will use a serviceable watercraft, properly fitted personal flotation device, required lighting, communication equipment, and other safety gear. I will follow applicable laws, venue requirements, director instructions, and the current CIKBS rules. I am responsible for deciding whether conditions are safe for me.

Emergency assistance

I authorize reasonable emergency assistance when I cannot provide instructions. I understand that CIKBS does not guarantee rescue or medical services and that I am responsible for medical, rescue, transportation, or other costs incurred on my behalf.

Release and indemnity

To the fullest extent permitted by Illinois law, I release and agree not to hold liable CIKBS, its organizers, volunteers, sponsors, landowners, host facilities, and their representatives for claims arising from the ordinary risks of participation or ordinary negligence. This draft does not release gross negligence, reckless conduct, intentional misconduct, or liability that cannot legally be waived. The final signed document may include additional insurer-required language.

Media and results

I understand that my name, score, placement, catch photographs, and event images may be used for tournament administration, published results, reporting, and reasonable promotion. Any separate commercial endorsement requires additional permission.

Minors

A participant under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian complete the final consent and waiver. CIKBS may also require an adult to accompany the minor on the water or at the venue.

Acknowledgement

The final registration flow will require a separate, affirmative waiver acknowledgement with the participant's name, date, document version, and electronic record. Viewing this draft alone does not create that acknowledgement.
